Baby First Aid Kit

Whether it’s at home or while traveling, having the necessary items on hand can make a big difference if an accident or illness occurs. Keeping a well-stocked first aid kit at home is important. It is also a good idea to carry a smaller kit in your car or your baby’s diaper bag when you are away from home.

You can purchase prepacked first aid kits at your local pharmacy or you can assemble your own. No single commercial product will contain everything you need so it is helpful to create your own personalized first aid kit.

Below is a checklist of first-aid kit essentials that are helpful to have. Although it is not necessary to carry all these items with you, it is a good idea to have them in your medicine chest at home in the event of an emergency.

Baby First Aid Essentials

  1. Baby thermometer
  2. Baby acetaminophen or ibuprofen, as recommended by your doctor, to reduce fever and ease pain. Even though Infant acetaminophen, such as Tylenol, is safe for babies older than 12 weeks, you should always check with your pediatrician before treating any fever with these medications.
  3. Emergency phone numbers including your doctor and local poison control center.
  4. Antibiotic ointment – Helps heal cuts and scraps. The ointment will also keep them from becoming infected. Check the label of the ointment to make sure it is safe for your baby.  Many creams are safe for ages 2+.
  5. Sterile bandages in various sizes and shapes
  6. Cold packs – Reduces swelling from bumps, minor burns, and bites. Purchase the kind you just squeeze to start the cooling reaction.
  7. Medicine dropper or oral syringe
  8. Bulb syringe/nasal aspirator for unclogging stuffed noses
  9. Tweezers for removing splinters and ticks
  10. Sharp scissors
  11. Alcohol wipes or liquid rubbing alcohol to clean thermometers, tweezers, scissors
  12. Sunscreen – Use on babies 6 months and older. Look for ones that are at least SPF 15 with UVA and UVB protection.
  13. Baby nail clippers
  14. Baby toothbrush
  15. Baby comb or brush

Baby First Aid Cautions

  • Always discuss medications and treatments with your pediatrician before using them on your baby. Do not give any child under 2 years old any medication, including over-the-counter pain relievers such as infant Tylenol and cold medication without checking with your pediatrician first.
  • Store all first aid kits in a box or a zippered bag that’s out of reach from children. Many items in a first-aid kit can be dangerous if left within reach of a child.
  • Check the expiration dates on all medications in your home.
  • Always store medications, including vitamins, in their original containers. This way, if your child accidentally takes a medication, you will know exactly what it is.

Diaper Bag Checklist

Being a parent means being prepared. After choosing a diaper bag, keeping it well-stocked can save the day. What to keep in your diaper bag depends on how old your child is, how long you’ll be out, where you’ll be going, and how prepared you like to be. Here are some tips on what to pack in a diaper bag.

Diaper Bag Must Haves

  1. Diapers – Pack at least 5 diapers if you will be away for the whole day. This number is dependent on how long you’ll be out of the house and on the age of your baby. Younger babies need more diaper changes than older babies.
  2. Travel size wipes – When you purchase a large bag or box of wipes, it often comes with a travel-size box of wipes. You can buy wipes in bulk and refill the smaller box as needed. Wipes are helpful not just for diaper changes, but also for sticky hands and dirty surfaces. If you have an extra set, you can also keep a box in your car.
  3. Portable changing pad – Most diaper bags come with a reusable and foldable changing pad. If you do not have one, consider purchasing one since it will come in handy when you need to change your baby in a public place that may not be so clean. The JJ Cole Changing Clutch Stone Arbor is a popular changing pad that also holds wipes and diapers. You can also purchase disposable ones.
  4. Small tube of diaper rash cream - Be ready to protect your baby’s bottom with some cream.
  5. Burp cloths – These lightweight cloths are perfect for throwing over your shoulder and protecting your clothes when you’re burping your baby. They are also good for wiping faces and spit-up. If you do not own any burp cloths, small towels will also work.
  6. Blanket - Blankets are handy when you need to put your baby down for a nap or need to cover him during cool temperatures. You can also use blankets as a nursing cover.
  7. Nursing cover - If you are going to breastfeed in public, you can use nursing covers to give you more privacy.
  8. Breast pads for nursing moms - Put breast pads in your bra to absorb breast milk leaks.
  9. Set of clothes - It is helpful to have an extra set of clothes in case your baby gets dirty or wet and you need to change him. You never know when there will be a spill or poop explosion that will require a change of clothing.
  10. Bottle - If you are nursing, make sure  you pack bottles of your breast milk in a cooler. If you are using formula, bring a bottle with the formula already measured inside or use single-portion packs.
  11. Hat - Use a hat for bright days to protect your baby from the harsh sun.
  12. Sunscreen - If your baby is younger than 6 months old, keep him out of direct sunlight. Dress him in light layers, use a hat to protect the back of his neck and top of his head, and only apply sunscreen when necessary. Be sure to read the directions on the sunscreen to make sure it is safe for your baby. Once your baby gets older,  you can use a broad-spectrum sunscreen. The SPF should be a minimum of 15, ideally 30. It is recommended that you replace your sunscreen every 2 years because of its limited shelf life.
  13. Favorite toy - Bring your child’s favorite toys in case he gets bored and fussy.
  14. Bib - Bibs can catch spit-ups or keep his shirt dry when he drools.
  15. Pacifier - If your baby uses a pacifier, you can pack one in a plastic storage bag.
  16. Hand sanitizer – Hand sanitizers are useful when you need to clean your hands before and after diaper changes, especially if you won’t be near soap and water.
  17. Phone numbers – Keep a copy of emergency contacts such as the numbers of your spouse, pediatrician, neighbor and your parents. This will come in handy in case you lose your phone or it runs out of battery.
  18. Plastic or biodegradable bags – These are helpful for storing soiled diapers and clothes.
  19. Snacks - Depending on the age of your baby, this can include a jar of baby food and a spoon.
  20. Sippy cup of milk, water or juice (for toddlers)
  21. Sling or wrap for carrying your baby - Even if you are going out with your stroller, you may want to park it and transfer your baby to a hands-free carrier.
  22. Baby first aid kit - You may want to include adhesive bandages, thermometer, fever relievers, and other first aid supplies.
  23. Tissues

Best Diaper Bags

Besides diapers and wipes, it will hold your baby’s clothes, snacks, toys, and other essentials. Read our guide on what to pack in a diaper bag.

You can save money by using a bag you already own but if you want to purchase a diaper bag, choose one that is most convenient for you. Keep your partner in mind when choosing a bag. One parent might prefer a tote diaper bag while another parent might prefer a backpack style to evenly distribute the bag’s weight.

Below is a list of different types of diaper bags on the market.

Backpack Diaper Bags

Diaper backpacks are convenient because you can carry around all your baby gear while keeping both of your hands free. They are suitable for parents who are less concerned about looks and want a functional diaper bag that frees up both hands.

From the outside, these baby bags look like regular backpacks, but if you look inside, they have a lot of pockets. You will have a single pocket dedicated to each item. Some backpacks have easy access pockets, such as an insulated baby bottle pocket and a diaper wipe pocket. These easy access pockets allow you to quickly access frequently used items. If the diaper backpack bag does not open all the way or have very few pockets, you may find it difficult to find what you’re looking for.

Advantages of diaper bag backpacks:

  • Free up both hands
  • Weight is more evenly distributed across your shoulders and back. The even weight distribution helps prevent back pain that may come with carrying a heavy bag on only one side of your body.
  • Men and women’s styles are available
  • Can be worn while exercising – you can effectively wear a diaper backpack while jogging or bike riding without having to worry about it sliding off your shoulder.

Disadvantages of diaper bag bookbags:

  • Not overly fashionable. You may feel like you are going to school
  • Not easily accessed while carried

Tote Diaper Bags

Totes are the most popular diaper bags. As a result, they are available in countless designs and attracts parents who want a fashionable diaper bag.

Tote diaper bags are pretty much giant handbags with a lot of room inside. They have a wide opening, allowing you to easily view and locate specific baby gear in a poop emergency. Some diaper tote bags come with detachable straps so you can turn it into a messenger bag, or simply grab the tote handle on the top.

Advantages of diaper bag totes:

  • A lot of room inside
  • Available in many different designs
  • Have a large opening

  • Can be bulky
  • Few designs suitable for dads

Below are top diaper totes highly rated by parents:

Messenger Diaper Bags

Also known as sling or satchel diaper bags, these have a long strap that hangs over the shoulder. Messenger diaper bags are generally flat and slimmer than totes. With many unisex designs, these are popular diaper bags for dads.

Many parents like the messenger style diaper bags because they do not have to take off the bag in order to retrieve their baby gear. With practice, you can take items out from the bag with one hand while carrying your baby in the other. However, since it hangs only from one shoulder, they place a lot of weight on one side of your body. This may be a problem if you are prone to sore backs.

It is easier to carry the messenger bag crossbody where the strap rests diagonally across your chest. If you carry it vertically, the bag can easily slip off your shoulder.

Advantages of diaper messenger bags:

  • Easy accessible while carried
  • Slim
  • Men and women’s styles available

Disadvantages of messenger diaper bags:

  • Weight is not evenly distributed – placed on one side of your body

Depending on your stroller, you may not want to carry a lot of baby gear in your diaper stroller bag.
